EMERGING BIPOC ARTISTS AND THEATRE-MAKERS
TECHNICAL THEATRE APPRENTICESHIP
2023-2024 SEASON APPLICATIONS HAVE CLOSED
Street Theatre Company is thrilled to announce our new apprenticeship program for emerging BIPOC Technical Theatre artists!
Our aim is to open the curtain and help achieve greater inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility in the Nashville theatre industry by developing education programs and pathway training for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) and historically marginalized theatre-makers who are looking for careers in non-performance areas of theatre.
This program is directed by Deonté Warren and supported by the Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility (IDEA) Board of Directors Committee and the Tennessee Arts Commission.
Technical Theatre Apprentices will be mentored by skilled artists and receive hands-on experience in a professional environment. One to two apprentices will be selected for each mainstage show.
Areas of focus include:
Directing
Music Directing
Stage Management
Lighting Design
Sound Design
Scenic Design
Costume Design
Properties Design
REQUIREMENTS FOR APPRENTICESHIP
Apprentices can expect to commit between 1-20 hours per week during their nine-week Apprenticeship. Time commitments will vary based on the apprentice’s area of interest and can be expected to increase as tech week and opening night approaches.
Apprentices must be well-organized, proactive, detail-oriented, possess strong communication skills (written, verbal and interpersonal), be able to prioritize, and multi-task.
Apprenticeship Dates – 9-week program based on the Apprentice’s individualized plan. Street Theatre Company will work with Apprentices on establishing a weekly schedule that works with the Apprentice’s classes, work schedule, and/or other obligations.
Compensation is $500 per 9-week program paid in one lump sum at the completion of the program.
Class credit may be arranged, depending upon school requirements. We will assist Apprentices in meeting the credit requirements of their school, but all arrangements must be made by the Apprentice.
All apprentices must complete a current W9 Tax Form.
Housing and transportation are not provided.
There are no age requirements, and the opportunity is open to all ages. This program is designed to benefit emerging technical theatre artists, and high school seniors, college students, and young adult professionals are encouraged to apply.
Though the apprenticeship aims to provide specific access to emerging theatre-makers from traditionally underrepresented communities, the opportunity is open to all races, ethnicities, identities, and backgrounds.
APPLICATIONS FOR OUR 2023-2024 season have closed.
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, but applicants are encouraged to apply as far in advance of their preferred production as possible.
Street Theatre Company Pay Equity Statement
At Street Theatre Company, we believe that art is work and that work deserves to be compensated. While historically we have not always been able to adequately pay our artists for their work, it is a priority of the STC Board of Directors to offer equitable wages. As a small nonprofit, we currently offer project-based stipends, but STC has a plan to increase our pay scale to meet equity minimums by the year 2027.
