Street Theatre Presents
No More Secrets
1 out of 6 girls and 1 out of 8 boys will be sexually abused each year. Statistics show that over 89% of child sexual assault and abuse comes from someone a family knows; and only 16% of children who suffer from abuse disclose. More than ever, children need the opportunity to learn more about the prevention of sexual abuse. Street Theatre Company is partnering with the Sexual Assault Center (SAC) to tour Nashville area elementary schools each spring with the show No More Secrets.

No More Secrets is a musical that tells the tale of a pre-teenaged girl named Jenny who for years has been sexually abused by a trusted neighbor, and her subsequent disclosure. The play entertains while at the same time provides children with information about abuse and how they can protect themselves and others from abuse. What is unique about No More Secrets is that it contains a remarkable blend of music, humor and candor. It addresses many of the concerns children may have about disclosing and connects with students artistically, while providing a strong and very important social message. All characters are portrayed by professional actors who have been trained by SAC counselors. The play is followed by a question and answer period during which important elements of the play are emphasized by the actors. The audience is invited to ask the cast questions, and an SAC counselor as well as school guidance counselors are available to provide additional support in the event of a disclosure. SAC additionally provides a presentation for the school staff and parents on the signs and symptoms of abuse, and disclosures. This entails a 1 ½ hour presentation after school for the entire staff and any interested parents. The anticipated outcome is that students will leave the performance with the knowledge and tools to prevent sexual abuse from happening to them. If they are already being abused, the anticipated outcome is that they will choose to disclose the abuse to a trusted adult.

Thanks to grants from the Target Foundation and more, the program’s $600 performance fee can be reduced or eliminated, depending on the school’s financial needs.
